Vintage Shorter & Son Shell Vase/Planter (R320)
The Shorter & Son pottery company closed its doors in 1964, after an almost 100-year long run. Fortunately for us, some pieces have remained in circulation – like our fabulous shell vase/planter. The designs manufactured by the company morphed over the many years of operation but the various shell planters are possibly my favourite designs – being made in different shell forms and colours and if I’m not mistaken, this range dates to the 1930s. Our pretty shell is stamped beneath with the maker’s mark, as well as an inscription of the model number and size (318 and L/S for larger size). The glaze and colours are in remarkably good condition, barring some minor crazing at the rim of the planter (see images) which wouldn’t be noticeable at all with a bunch of flowers sitting inside.
