Gladstone Side/Dessert Plates (R350)
Like many other known and much loved English pottery and ceramics makers, Gladstone China Works hail from Stoke-On-Trent in the north of England. The company never hired the services of popular designers, but certainly kept up to speed with trends of the day and produced good quality and beautiful crockery like the gorgeous design we have on sale today. I haven’t been able to discover much about the design, but based on the back stamp, these plates were manufactured between 1924 and 1939. The fabulous square shape of the plates is true to their art-deco heritage, and the design is absolutely charming. I have no idea what particular plant, if any, is depicted but the yellow and brown leaves, along with what must be berries as marked with a solid splotch of red paint - giving them texture and shine. This lovely set of 11 mint condition plates is really very special!
