Bread Bin
I think this may be the coolest bread bin I’ve ever met! If I’m not mistaken, the Krost company started in South Africa in the 1920s as manufacturers of steel products and are still going strong, although their business has changed over the years. I am not sure the exact vintage of the bread bin but my guess would be pre-1940s when the company’s focus changed after the war from utility products to office essentials. They are still going strong as successful manufacturers of office furniture, office storage and the like. The bread bin has been decorated with some scuffs to the paintwork of the body and sliding door handle, as well as the “BREAD” sign, but despite these obvious signs of age, the bread bin looks great. The scrapes on the inner base of the bin suggest the previous owners cut their bread directly in the bin (which seems a little complicated to me!) but of course, these aren’t visible when the roller door is shut and also, would be covered by a freshly baked loaf!
